Issue 8 | Term 2 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
What a wild couple of weeks of weather we have had! The intense rain lead to many event cancellations and even a fallen tree across Benowa Road, but in spite all of this, Benowa State School has managed to shine at the events we have attended and are highlighted below.
So far the weather is clear for our Year 5 and 6 Interschool Sports Competition on Wednesday 03 June.
I would like to put a call out to our parent community to assist with umpiring again this round.
If you are knowledgeable, confident and are available next Wednesday 03 June from 12:15pm to 2:30pm to come our sporting fields to umpire any of these 3 sports:
•
Soccer - Benowa State School (4 people needed)
•
Basketball - Benowa State School (3 people needed)
•
Netball - Southport Netball Association (next to Bellevue Park State School (4 people needed)
If so, please send me an email as soon as you are able
principal@benowass.eq.edu.au.
If you have played the game yourself and been actively involved in the sport, then you would probably make the perfect primary school inter-school sport umpire.
Mr Michael Josey
Principal

The Kokoda Challenge is just weeks away!
Our Kokoda teams have had a few days off due to the weather and conditions in the forest. But that doesn't dampen their spirits nor determination as they continue to train indoors and whenever the weather permits.
Well done to our teachers and students who have persisted, it goes to show our true Benowa grit and determination that will no doubt shine through again on the 13 June. Go Benowa!
We would love everyone to be able to donate a small amount in support of our Kokoda teams who are fundraising for The Kokoda Youth Foundation. A local charity that has been empowering young Australians to achieve extraordinary things for over 20 years.

Under 8's Day was AMAZING!
This year marked 70 years of Under 8's Day and what a day it was! Our morning was filled with laughter and fun across the entire Junior playground, as our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2's visited all the activities on offer.
A big thank you to our wonderful Year 6 students who helped out and assisted our Junior students and our friends at Benowa State High School who brought bubbles and slime and so much messy fun to our Under 8's morning. We are so grateful
Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate with us, thank you to our Kindys for coming along to share in the fun and helped make our Under 8's day so magical
A big shout out to our Ecomarines Ambassadors who have helped out at our last two Food Forest Markets.
We have had an abundance of bananas, bok choy and pawpaws harvested from our food forest and for sale each Friday morning with huge success. All proceeds from our markets go straight back into our garden.
Thank you to our community who have come along to support our Food Forest, we are so proud to be able to share our garden with you and sell our deliciously, fresh, organic produce.

On Monday the 11th of May our Year 5 and 6 STEM Robotics students had an exciting day attending the SUMO LEGO Competition at Carrara Indoor Stadium. All students participated enthusiastically, demonstrating teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills throughout the event.
It was wonderful to see students challenge themselves, learn new robotics skills and support one another in such a positive environment. Most importantly, everyone had fun working together as a team, while gaining valuable hands-on experience in coding, design and engineering.
Congratulations to Sean, Troy, Asir and Oliver from our Team 3 - Robot Masters who received the Design, Core Value and Innovative Awards!
STEM Coaches Mrs Barling and Mrs Williams are incredibly proud of the way our students represented our school and embraced every opportunity to learn.

Why do I need to enrol my child in high school a whole year prior to starting?
- To ensure ALL students are empowered to have a future of choice - not chance
- To support your child's academic performance and well-being when transitioning from primary to high school
- For parents and schools to equip students for their future in caring partnership with their new school
Did you know, that as parents and carers you have the biggest influence on how smooth the transition will befor your child as they make the move to high school? Your support has a strong and long-lasting effect on a positive transition moving from primary school into high school - even more of an impact than their friends do!

Future Innovators in Action!
This term, a group of ten Year 6 students had the exciting opportunity to step beyond the classroom and experience the world of STEM through the Queensland Academies STEM Masterclass Program. Across four engaging after-school sessions, students travelled to the Queensland Academies Health Sciences Campus where they worked alongside STEM specialists and students from other schools.
Each workshop encouraged students to think creatively, tackle challenges and explore how STEM connects to the world around us. Through hands-on investigations and collaborative tasks, students discovered that learning can happen in some very exciting ways!
Human Performance and Movement
Students explored how the body moves and functions while participating in an exciting scavenger hunt challenge. Along the way, they investigated concepts such as energy, movement and teamwork through active and interactive tasks.
Becoming Young Scientists
The chemistry labs were a highlight, with students suiting up in safety gear and stepping into the role of scientists. They experimented with mixtures, observed reactions and investigated how science works in real-life settings.
Maths Beyond the Classroom
Students became mathematical detectives as they worked together to solve a challenging mystery using clues, logic and problem-solving skills. Through games, puzzles and hands-on activities, they explored new mathematical concepts in a fun and engaging way.
Messy Mixtures and Curious Creations
Students explored the fascinating world of non-Newtonian fluids by creating and experimenting with Oobleck. Through hands-on investigation, they observed how materials can behave like both a liquid and a solid, while discussing properties of matter and testing how science can sometimes challenge our expectations.
Beyond the STEM learning, students developed teamwork skills, built confidence and formed connections with students from different schools. It was wonderful to see them challenge themselves, take risks in their thinking and embrace new experiences.
We are incredibly proud of the curiosity, enthusiasm and problem-solving skills our students demonstrated throughout the program and look forward to seeing where their passion for STEM takes them next!
