A wonderful achievement in difficult times
International student, Sooye, came to Benowa State School at the beginning of 2020 from Korea.
Only a few months into Term 1, COVID-19 impacted on all of us, harder on some than others. As Sooye moved into Learning from Home, classroom interaction was very limited and the lack of socialising made it difficult to make new friends.
Despite all these setbacks, in August Sooye was nominated by her peers to be a Class Representative and inducted into Benowa State School Student Council.
In only six months, we feel this is a wonderful achievement for this young student in our International Student Program.
Well done Sooye.
Hugo – An example of an empowered International learner from Benowa State School
In January 2019, Hugo, a student from China, joined our International Student Program and enrolled at Benowa State School.
When Hugo arrived at Benowa he had little to no English.
In just 2 years and 4 months, with the help and assistance from his family, teachers, EAL/D Inclusion Teacher support, support from our Education Assistants, and committment, hard work and great attention to his studies, Hugo has been able to produce this amazing poem sharing how he feels about life on our Harmony Day and what diversity means to him.

Harmony Day at school
Oh! What a super sensational school day!
I can hear the children happily play.
Harmony Day is a day of people playing and celebrating.
Cultural, traditions we are creating. The cultural games are loads of fun.
But math, science are what must be done.
Two million of human inventions.
We must evolve with good intentions. Once every year that day comes along.
On Harmony Day every one belongs.
Different languages do not matter.
Because all students like friendly chatter! We are all the family of Earth.
It doesn't matter, our country of birth.
Harmony Day enables us to come together.
Our friendship will be unbreakable forever.
