The Kokoda Challenge

PublishingPageContent

The Kokoda Challenge is an annual event run across South East Queensland. Benowa State School proudly participates in the 18Km Gold Coast trek across the gruelling tracks of our majestic yet ruggered South East Queensland terrain.

Each year, we enter several eager and motivated teams of Year 5 and Year 6 students who undergo an intense training period in the lead up to the event. The dedication and support exhibited by our students and their families in the weeks prior is truly wonderful.

Our students, under the supervision and guidance of our Benowa teachers and support staff, are all humbled and inspired by the story of Kokoda and the many challenges our Australian soldiers faced as they fought on the Kokoda Track in papua New Guinea in WWII. The Kokoda Challenge embodies the Spirit of Kokoda through Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice and each student who partipates is shown how these core values are still very relevant today.

Each of our teams are encouraged to fundraise for the Challenge entrance fee which goes towards the Kokoda Youth Foundation - an Australian charity who run a range of youth programs to support local youth.

This year in June, our Year 5 and 6 students are once again taking on the Kokoda Challenge. We have registered 10 teams this year (consisting of 4 students and 1 teacher in each team) who have been training hard on weekends and outside school under the supervision and guidance of teachers and support staff, in preparation for the gruelling 18km in rugged terrain on the outskirts of Brisbane.

We are all humbled and inspired by the story of Kokoda and the many challenges our Australian soldiers faced as they fought on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea in WWII. The Kokoda Challenge events are operated by the Kokoda Youth Foundation with the mission to achieve three main things; keep the spirit of Kokoda alive through educating participants about the history of the Kokoda Campaign in 1942, raise funds our local youth programs that transform the lives of kids in our community and deliver Australia's toughest team endurance event for our competitors so they too can push their own physical and mental limits while walking in the footsteps of our diggers.

The Kokoda Challenge embodies the Spirit of Kokoda through Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice and each student who participates is shown how these core values are still very relevant today.

Each team entering the Challenge is required to fundraise $250 to go towards the Kokoda Youth Foundation, an Australian charity who run a range of youth programs to support local youth and our teams are well on their way to reaching their fundraising targets.

Below are the links to our fundraising pages where you can make a donation and support our students in taking part in this year's Kokoda Challenge. Donations are tax deductable - can you or your business sponsor a team?
